Bad Odors Around the House: Where It is Coming From and How to Get Rid of It

You spend the entire weekend scrubbing and tidying your entire house, but why is there an unpleasant odor wafting in the air?

Smells inside a house are quite normal. You do all sorts of activities inside your house, including make and eat food, exercise, sleep, bathe, etc. All these create different scents, both good and bad.

So, what do you do if there is a stench in your house? Before you try to mask it with scented candles and oils, you may want to look for the source first. Here are the most common reasons why your house is smelly.

In the Kitchen

Most likely, if there is an unpleasant odor, it is coming from inside the kitchen.

Your kitchen is a prime suspect because food is involved in most of the activities that happen in this part of your house. Although food smells good, it will stink when it rots and spoils.

Check your oven for leftovers. You should be routinely cleaning out your appliances, especially your oven. If you do not have the time, hire an oven cleaning service and let the professionals handle it.

Your refrigerator, too, can create unpleasant odors. There is a lot of food stored in there, all of which emit different scents. These scents, when mixed, can smell pungent. Aside from regular clean up, store an open box of baking soda inside your refrigerator.

Lastly, give your dishwater a thorough wipe. Any environment that has moisture and water can be a breeding ground for mold, mildew. The food might also be rotting inside your dishwater.

In the Bedroom

You do not think your bedroom is safe from unpleasant odors. Your bed and the sheets absorb the sweats and oils from your body. After a while, it will stink. Your sheets and your bedding should be replaced at least once a week to prevent unwanted smells.

Although you do not go inside it, your closet, where it is dark and unventilated, could be harboring odors. Every once in a while, keep the closet doors open to let air flow in and out. You do not want moisture to be trapped in there for hours if not days and weeks.

In the Bathroom

Odors also often come from the bathroom for obvious reasons. However, one of the most common reasons why there is a stench in the bathroom is the presence of mildew.

Mildew thrives in environments that are high in moisture. You would know that you have mildew if there is a musty smell similar to wet socks. It is easy to clean. All you have to do is spray undiluted white vinegar in surfaces where there is mildew, let it sit for a few hours, and then scrub.

Garbage

When was the last time you took out the trash?

Sometimes, people are so busy that they forget or do not have time to do everyday chores. However, it only takes two minutes to take out the trash. It is worth it to have a break from your busy schedule and do your chores to keep the house looking and smelling nice.

It is better to identify the source of the unpleasant odors so you can address it and prevent it from happening again. You would feel more confident in inviting your friends to come and hang out in your home if the place smells fantastic at all times.
